How to Prepare Yerba Mate
Preparing mate is simple once you know the ritual. Start with the basics, then make it your own.
Fill the gourd
Add yerba mate until the gourd is about half to three-quarters full.
Create the slope
Tilt the gourd gently so the yerba rests on one side. This helps create space for water.
Insert the bombilla
Place the metal straw into the lower side of the gourd. Try not to move it too much after placing it.
Pour warm water and sip
Use warm water, not boiling. Sip through the bombilla and refill the gourd several times.
For cold mate, prepare it with cold water, ice, mint, or citrus. This is called tereré.
